PREVIOUS EXHIBITIONS
The Egon Schiele Art Centrum mainly presents classic 20th century art and parallel to this contemporary Czech and international art over an exhibition area of 4000 square metres. Apart from the permanent exhibition of Egon Schiele graphics together with unique exhibits from his personal estate a multilingual documentary section provides an insight into Schiele´s life and work. Works by the following artists have been displayed in successive exhibitions in the ESAC since 1993 in addition to a permanent documentation on the life and work of Egon Schiele and displays of his water-colours and drawings:

Michael Rittstein (*1949)
SO...A selection of rarely shown and never before exhibited paintings by Professor Michael Rittstein from the 70s, 80s and 90s as well as the early 21st century. From the famous "Scenes from the Plattenbau (high-rise block of flats)" to the last imaginative paintings that were created in the Bohemian Forest during the pandemic. From private and public collections. Typical and atypical images. Classic and unusual techniques. Surprising motifs. Something to think about. For amusement. Take a tour of the exhibition and fly through half a century.
Kateřina Šedá
UNES-TOKateřina Šedá freely follows up the UNES-CO project by taking it to a new level in the shape of the UNES-TO society, whose vision and rules she attempts to define not only by herself but also with the aid of her 12-year-old daughter Julie or mother Hana (67). All three meet together in grandmother Milady´s (1935-2018) living room , which we transported from Brno to Český Krumlov and made accessible to visitors at a time when "remnants of normal life" were being sought in the centre of Krumlov.
Jakub Sýkora (*1984)
UNCLEARThanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Institute of Arts, the young painter lived and worked in our studios in Český Krumlov for three months in 2020. The cycle of mostly large-format paintings created here was painted partly in deserted Krumlov and partly at a time when Czech tourists had begun to return to the town. The painter complemented his visual perception of the empty town and later on groups of tourists with inadvertently overheard calls from the street, which he often used as the name of the painting or simply inscribed on the wall next to the installed paintings.
Tets Ohnari, J - home
The Japanese sculptor Tets Ohnari has also repeatedly stayed in Český Krumlov. He created fantastic granite objects in our studios (one of them can be seen today in the ESAC atrium, the other on the square in Hluboká nad Vltavou), a series of photographs inspired by the world-famous Schiele poses in Anton Josef Trčka's photographs from 1914, but also smaller wooden objects. This year, on the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Czech Republic, the Japanese sculptor has created a large glass installation depicting time flowing over the historic town of Krumlov and its inhabitants.Josef Seidel (1859-1935) - Krumlov at the Time of Egon Schiele
We decided to supplement the exhibitions by contemporary authors, as well as a permanent documentary exhibition on the life and work of Egon Schiele, with an exhibition of photographs called Krumlov in Schiele's Day. In cooperation with the Museum Fotoatelier Seidel, we have prepared dozens of photographs from the period of Schiele's lifetime (1890–1918). In addition to a number of photographs by Josef Seidel (1859–1935), several photographs by Josef Wolf (1864–1938) and Wenzel Mick (1872–1951) are also on display.2020
Alena Anderlová, CZ - inspiration from the city and its surroundings
The Czech painter Alena Anderlová has repeatedly stayed in Krumlov and we invited her to undertake a longer stay, wondering if Krumlov was still as inspiring a place for artists as it was in Schiele's day. Despite the fact that the town was full to bursting of tourists during Alena Anderlová's stay and her colleague Kateřina Šedá had just presented her project dealing with the overcrowding of UNES-CO tourist centres, the painter created a series of paintings that look visionary today as they show Krumlov touchingly empty, with only a few lonely people or animals.

Judith Zillich, A - 100 x 1 model
The exhibition by the Austrian painter Judith Zillich offers a very interesting approach to the nude, the semi-nude and to the choice of the model. More than ten years of work with one model is a time-consuming documentary about the model, but also about the painter and the relationship of these two neighbours from a Viennese building.

Karel Valter (1909 - 2006)
on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the birth of Karel Valter, one of the most interesting personalities from South Bohemia, we are preparing an exhibition of paintings, drawings and graphic art by this versatile artist. "I do not regard the landscape as a variable entity, but I observe everything that forms in it and what is new and I look for everything that connects me as a man with nature, what excites and attracts me. When I say with nature, I mean more than merely the landscape itself, because in this way I come into contact with all the comprehensible and incomprehensible internal relationships that are set deeply and hidden within it , and these provide a richer response to our life, its value and its mystery. And this is also closest to the poeticization of all things that I have always succumbed to in my wanderings through the landscape. " Karel Valter, Nature Label, 1999Kateřina Šedá: UNES-CO / Final Report
The exhibition immediately follows on from the work with which Kateřina Šedá represented the Czech Republic at the 16th International Biennale of Architecture in Venice. UNES_CO's (fictitious) headquarters is moving to Český Krumlov for the duration of the exhibition, and Kateřina Šedá has further artistically developed the ideas and intentions of the company that aims to protect normal life in historically and architecturally magnificent (and therefore much visited) city centres. It maps the transformation of "normal life" in the public spaces of not only Český Krumlov, but also of many other European cities. It consists of the results of several months of surveys, interviews and debates from the field as well as non-standard solutions. It presents photos, film records, interviews, letters ... It presents essential - and a great deal of additional - information about the inhabitants and tourists, about their wishes and desires, but also about methods of communication between people and their ability to accept different opinions. In this context it touches on the phenomenon of direct and anonymous hatred on the one hand, and large (direct and anonymous) project support on the other.Federico Díaz (*1971)
The exhibition presents a selection from the work of Federico Díaz from 1992 onwards. The work of the successful Czech Argentine visual activist (Robert T. Buck, Brooklyn Museum, first used this term for Diaz´s work) is based on his interest in man, nature and science. The artist uses the simplest and most complex ways of uncovering things that we have ceased to perceive and which we are ceasing to understand because of technological overload. Federico Díaz is not afraid of excess technology; on the contrary, he considers it the most appropriate addition to the oldest human way of exploration - observation.2018
VIEW OF WOMEN
MARIE BLABOLILOVÁ (*1948)
In spite of its specific minimalism, the work of Marie Blabolilová
arouses strong emotions; the painter and graphic artist is able to
"describe" time in the simplest terms whether it is a matter of the
1960s or the present day. Her extensive retrospective exhibition
includes graphics, drawings and paintings that focus on the 1960s. Part
of the installation will also be made up of i.a. furniture from this
era, linoleum and glass and the like with served as sources of
inspiration, but also as working materials.
EVA IŠKOVÁ PROKOPCOVÁ (*1948)
The expressive painting of the South Bohemian recluse Eva Prokopcová was
already displayed to tens of thousands of our visitors a decade ago.
The exhibition for 2018, which is currently being prepared, is
characterized by the fact that the artist lets us look into the
unfortunate fate of of her family that was separated forever after 1948:
the parents decided to emigrate with their infant, but the baby came
down with a fever so the mother remained in Czechoslovakia with the
child and only the father could flee through the Bohemian Forest. The
family never met again.
IKUKO MIYAZAKI (*1954)
The Japanese artist from Okayama first encountered Egon Schiele's work
in November 1995; it made a very strong impression on her. Her
subsequent studies of Schiele's life and work soon grew into artistic
creations inspired by the famous work of the Austrian painter. First
of all she began to transform Schiele's self-portraits into
three-dimensional objects to gradually bring the characters around
Schiele back to life - especially the women whom the artist had drawn
and painted over a hundred years ago. Next year works of varying
proportions and varying degrees of inspiration will not only commemorate
Schiele's premature death, but also the inspirational power of his
work, which even after a hundred years influences artists from all over
the world.
MAGDALENA Chaya Rachel RAJNIŠOVÁ (*1958)
After long-term residences abroad (Switzerland, France, Ireland, New
Mexico, Italy, Israel and others) the painter returned to the house of
her birth in Kladno. Her life, which has not always been easy, has
materialized in her pictures whereby the “memory of the places“ she
lived in assumes a fundamental role. Her themes are: the desert and
light, but also biblical motifs. Her work for the theatre is of
significance (Forman Brother’s Theatre, Theatre 58 in Zürich, Taos
Theatre Company in New Mexico) or cooperation with archaeologists in
Israel.
BERNADETTE HUBER (*1962)
Egon in Krumlov 2018, videoart
The Austrian artist Bernadette Huber worked in our studios
(including Schiele's Garden Studio) in February, March and April. Her
animated film "Schiele 2018", which was created here, will be presented
from 1.6.2018 in an ESAC exhibition hall.
KATEŘINA ŠEDÁ (*1977)
The new project from this interesting and successful Czech artist is
very unusual, yet witty and responds to a remarkable global phenomenon
of recent times - the overcrowding and emptying of the most desirable
world tourist centres. These places are often historical and
architectural jewels on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which are being
"gradually cleansed" of their normal urban / rural infrastructure and
finally even of their original inhabitants by the flood of hundreds of
thousands or even millions of tourists.
ANNA MACKOVÁ (1887 - 1969)
The exhibition mainly shows Anna Macková‘s graphic work and life story which are both characteristic of the fate of women/artists in the first half of the 20th century. A.M. came from a wealthy family – estate owners in Studeňany. Quite unusually for a girl of her time, she fought for and won the opportunity to study portraiture, still life and landscape painting at Karl Reisner’s School in Prague from 1909-1911 and later graphics under František Horký. In 1918 she met her man of destiny, Josef Váchal; they travelled together, inspired each other and thought out new approaches to coloured woodcuts. She supported the these days much better known Josef Váchal with substantial financial assistance. Their health was seriously affected by the fact that Anna Macková‘s family farm, where they lived during the Second World War, was gradually confiscated after 1948.

exhibition in honour of his life and work
a celebration of the 120th anniversary of his birth
The exhibition shows examples of the works of genius of the artist of Czech, Austrian and German descent and recalls the artist's relationship to the town of Český Krumlov. In the exhibition we also remember those friends with whom Schiele spent time in not only Vienna, but also in some cases in Krumlov – e.g. Anton Peschka, Erwin Osen, Antonín Josef Trčka, Gustav Klimt, Richard Teschner, Arthur Roessler and so on.

ROBERT SCHAD
Through the Line
steel sculptures
Robert Schad's artistic style centres around dialogic interactions between opposing forces. The attempt to reconcile the seemingly irreconcilable is what drives him forward. His sculptures appear to be simultaneously open and closed, dynamic and static, light- and heavyweight, unstable and stable. This is not least dependent on the specific properties of the material used and the way it is processed by the artist. Regardless of their specific attributes - be they wall- or floor-mounted, individual pieces or multi-part works, large-scale indoor pieces, outdoor sculptures that make a major claim on space or small works presented on plinths - all of Schad's sculptural works are made of solid square steel bars with cross-sections ranging from 45 mm to 160 mm, whereby the size of Schad's hand was the determining factor for the smallest bar size.

Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966)
The exhibition in the Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Český Krumlov presents Giacometti's graphic main cycle from the last eight years of his life Paris without End, an oil painting with a portrait of his beloved brother, exhibits of the artist´s sculpting masterpieces (Striding, 1949, Nude, 1954 and a bust of his brother Diego from 1957) and last but not least a cycle of photographs, in which Ernst Scheidegger (b. 1923), who got to know Giacometti in 1943, captured the artist at work in the studio and in his free time.
This exhibition in Český Krumlov in cooperation with the Kunsthaus Zürich as well as the accompanying catalogue could not have been produced without significant financial support from the Swiss Pro Helvetia Foundation, Komerční banky, p.l.c., the Municipality of Český Krumlov and the Region of South Bohemia. Our grateful thanks are due to all of these institutes and companies. We also thank the Customs Office of the Czech Republic for its very helpful conduct during the processing of the customs documentation for this exhibition which comes from outwith the European Union.
The trilingual accompanying catalogue (88 sides incl. 46 black and white whole page illustrations, 20 photographs and texts ) in Czech / German / English can be ordered through the above-listed contacts at the price of 10 EURO plus postage.
Ernst Scheidegger (b. 1923, Switzerland)
Ernst Scheidegger became acquainted with Alberto Giacometti in 1943 in Maloja. He worked as a freelance journalist for the Magnum agency in Paris, before working from 1960-88 as editor of the weekly supplement of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. From 1962 he directed documentary films about visual and graphic artists as well as numerous film contributions on artistic topics for Swiss Television. In 1962 he also founded his own publishing house with a first book by Jean Genet about Alberto Giacometti.
In 1990 the volume "Traces of a friendship - Alberto Giacometti" appeared. It represented the sum total of Scheidegger´s work on Giacometti. Then in 1993 "The Bergel – Giacometti´s Homeland" came out.
The exhibition presents 22 photographs from Alberto Giacometti´s studio with the friendly permission of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
Eva Prokopcová (b. 1948 Český Krumlov)
pictures, drawings, installation
Eva Prokopcová, certainly one of the most talented contemporary South Bohemian artists, attended a stone-cutter school before she studied architecture at Prague University and following that graduated from the Academy of the Graphic and Visual Arts in Prague.
Her first colourful, figurative paintings were replaced, after a personal crisis, by a geometric, grey and flat style which in the end brought her once more to an existential boundary. She forced herself against her convictions to return to colour. There were no longer any figures, however the colours exploded in form. Apart from abstract painting she keeps on creating experimental works with gathered materials which she uses in an untypical way.

is mainly known to a wider public as a poet from the period of Symbolism and Decadence. The exhibition in the Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Český Krumlov presents visual and graphic works by the artist which are on loan from the Museum of National Literature in Prague.
Stanislav Kolíbal has ranked amongst the most distinguished members of the Czech art scene since the 1950s; this exhibition prepared in the Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Český Krumlov is a representative cross-section of his creative work with special emphasis on the latest as yet unexhibited work. The accompanying publication is based on a principle that has been unknown in this country till now. The author comments on his work himself. This manner of interpretation breaks down the borders between the artist and his public thus enabling the viewer to enter the artist's world and get acquainted with his sources of inspiration and the hidden meaning of his individual works. The accompanying publication with more than 300 reproductions and 300 pages in length is tri-lingual (Czech / German / English).
The trilingual catalogue (267 sides with black and white illustrations) in Czech / German / English can be ordered through the above-listed contacts at the price of 13 EURO plus postage.
ARNOLD SCHOENBERG (1874-1951)
The artistic work of the founder of modern classical music is a surprise: although Schoenberg only painted for a few years, he nonetheless created a lot of pictures and drawings that are worthy of notice. The interactive, multi-medial exhibition which can be heard in 10 languages, presents his musical and pictorial talent together with artefacts connected with his own activity as a composer.
Accompanying programme:
On Thursday 5.8.2004 in cooperation with the Auviex Company a concert of Schoenberg's compositions will be performed directly in the exhibition hall.

opened for the last time; the exhibition offered drawings, pictures, objects and sculptures, furniture, fashion (including jewellry), music and documentary material from selected happenings in the sixties, seventies and eighties. A tri-lingual catalogue was issued to accompany the exhibition as was a CD “Milan Knížák Live“ with a recording of the successful concert of Knížák‘s composition for strings, which took place in the exhibition area of the Schiele Centrum.
The cooperation with the artist was exceptionally pleasant and the ESAC therefore looks forward to having the opportunity to work together with Milan Knížák in the future.
