Luděk Rathouský (*1975)

The exhibition presents over 160 paintings and drawings by this Czech painter across seven exhibition spaces. His celebrated series inspired by the masters of the Middle Ages are also on display. In these works the artist quotes from Gothic paintings — most notably from the works of Master Theodoric and the Master of the Vyšší Brod Altarpiece. He interprets the paintings in a highly individual way, simplifying his source material and reducing individual elements to basic geometric shapes, which he then reassembles into half-figure forms. He makes use of bold colours and adds ornament, and frequently works with paint rollers. He preserves the iconic essence of the medieval painting — its representative character expressed with the aid of symbols, formal reduction, striking colour, and majesty. Colour plays a significant role, reinforcing the dignity of the depicted figures and the mystery of the narrative. Luděk Rathouský retains this symbolic dimension of colour; colour is inextricably linked to the content in his paintings. The exhibition also includes a fascinating series of chalk drawings in which Rathouský has documented every vessel of the former and now-defunct Czechoslovak Ocean Shipping Fleet. One of the exhibition spaces is devoted to large-format emotionally charged paintings with autobiographical elements. The artist himself says: "My paintings are proof of my existence."

Lois Fasching (*1957)

The slightly larger-than-life sculptures by this Austrian artist depict King Henry VIII of England, important and lesser-known figures from his court, as well as the monarchs of the Holy Roman Empire and France. The artist has deliberately avoided the traditional portrayal of Henry as a man who married six wives and had some of them executed. Instead, through his selection of companions, he presents us with one of the many power structures within which Henry VIII operated. There is no shortage of prominent statesmen involved in court intrigues — such as Thomas Wolsey, Thomas Cromwell, and Thomas Cranmer — nor of significant intellectuals who contributed to stimulating debates with the learned English king, such as Erasmus of Rotterdam and Thomas More. The mysterious atmosphere is further enhanced by the beautiful, lesser-known women in the king's circle. The cycle concludes with Queen Elizabeth, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, who is portrayed as a strong ruler who led England to peace and prosperity and became a legend.

 
Permanent exhibition about the life and work of Egon Schiele (1890-1918), whose mother, Marie Soukupová (1862-1935) was born in Krumlov. You can see drawings, graphics, the artist's own furniture, personal letters, business cards, dozens of photographs, Schiele's family tree, documentation about his stays in Krumlov and the motifs on his paintings and drawings.
Parallel to this we have seasonally changing exhibitions of classical and contemporary 20th and 21st century art.
