ALOIS RIEDL (*1935)
Retrospective on the occasion of his 90th birthday. The works by the Austrian artist Alois Riedl that form the exhibition in Český Krumlov illustrate the development of his internationally acclaimed work over the last 50 years. Riedl's artistic work began in the 1960s when, initially as an autodidact (he had previously trained as a tailor and then worked as a customs officer), he made pencil drawings of everyday seating furniture. Focusing on a specific object became a necessity for him, setting in motion a creative process in which the object functions not as a carrier of meaning but - despite all the trends of the time - as a fascinating form that he obsessively tries to dissolve in painting. Riedl's style oscillates between figurative painting and abstraction, whereby he cheerfully and skillfully crosses the boundaries of both. In the 1990s, he discovered the disc as the optimal shape that evoked a further working process in him leading towards three-dimensionality.
Permanent exhibition about the life and work of Egon Schiele (1890-1918), whose mother, Marie Soukupová (1862-1935) was born in Krumlov. You can see drawings, graphics, the artist's own furniture, personal letters, business cards, dozens of photographs, Schiele's family tree, documentation about his stays in Krumlov and the motifs on his paintings and drawings.
Parallel to this we have seasonally changing exhibitions of classical and contemporary 20th and 21st century art.
