ROMAN TÝC: 3 KILOS OF FATE

installation

Roman Týc is famous for his work in public places, which react to social issues and often in a schocking way. He is also member of the ZtohoVen art group. His project in the Egon Schiele Art Centrum, is called 3 Kilos of Fate and it presents graphics made from human ash. The name of this exhibition, as well as this strange non artistic material, refer to the fact, that only three kilos of ash (more or less), remain here after we die – ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Roman Týc also wants to stress the unity of human beings after death: they have to fit into a standard-sized urn. And what about the left-over ash? Roman Týc found out, that this ash is unceremoniously thrown away (by some Czech cremetoria). His portraits and other works are made from this "left-over ash". The shock, which is the usual reaction to these works made out of human ash, is a way of pointing out this fact and of hopefully causing a change. Roman Týc also deals with his personal drama:"When you are a six year old boy and your mum dies, you perceive her as just like a two kilogram metal urn and you know her just from photos - you, as a child believe that there must be a way of getting her out of the tin, of setting her free." The artist is trying to resurrect dead people from their ash, to graphically recall their faces and bodies and to fulfil his desperate childhood aim.

The exposition is part of a series of independent exhibitions called Intimissimo!
